How to Use the File Type Detector Tool
🔍 Open the File Type Detector and follow along with this tutorial.
Open Tool →Step 1: Upload Any File
Click Upload File in the toolbar, or drag and drop any file onto the drop zone. The tool reads the first 1 KB of the file for detection — the full file is not read into memory unless needed.
Step 2: Review File Information
The File Information card shows the filename, extension, file size, and a MIME type hint derived from the detection.
Step 3: Review Detection Result
The Detection Result card shows:
- Detected type: The identified file format.
- Confidence: High, medium, or low, based on how many indicators matched.
- Evidence: A list of specific indicators that contributed to the verdict — extension match, content markers, byte signatures.
Step 4: Follow Next Step Links
If a matching tool exists on this site, a Suggested Next Steps card appears with a direct link to the appropriate viewer or converter. For example, detecting a QFX file shows links to the QFX Viewer and QFX converters.
Privacy reminder: Detection is entirely local. Your file is never uploaded.
